Waste Water Treatment Plant-A GeoExchange Opportunity

Waste water treatment plants offer a unique opportunity for the Geo-Exchange industry.  They offer plenty of low-grade heat during heating season and heat rejection ability during cooling season.  This presentation discusses some general opportunities and challenges of this application and discusses a specific 60-ton system currently under construction.

Faller is a professional engineer specializing in mechanical design of commercial and industrial buildings. Faller has worked in the consulting industry since 1998, and holds LEED, CGD and PMP certified, is a member of PMI, IGSHPA, and ASHRAE, and is membership chair for the Geothermal Energy Organization of Saskatchewan.

Shanghai’s Concordia International School is in a region with a high density of foreign manufacturing plants. Design and installation details and current performance of the 1500 ton newly commissioned system will be presented. The project involved 237,000 sq. ft. of existing space and 140,000 sq. ft. new construction.

Xu is research associate professor and director of the Institute for Energy Technology at the University of Missouri. He has more than 20 years experience in thermal engineering research and engineering practice. Working with DOE and Beijing, Xu demonstrated large scale GSHP systems for commercial buildings in Beijing in 2003, advised in Beijing Olympic facilities and in 2006 set up an office in Beijing to assist U.S. companies in China. Xu is directing the Chinese Chapter of IGSHPA.

Ground Source Heat Pump System for a Shopping Center in Istanbul Turkey with 18 km (11 mile) Vertical Drilling

Metro shopping center in Istanbul, had a hybrid ground source system designed and installed with 18,300 meters of vertical drilling. Total building load is 3,500 kw cooling. Building started in end of 2007. It is one of the biggest applications in Europe. The complete ground work and the supply of equipment has been done by FORM company.

Korun holds a U.S. mechanical engineering degree and a master's in business from Istanbul University in Turkey. The general manager and owner of Form Company, Korun is past president of ISKID–a Turkish HVAC Manufacturers society, and a past board member of TTMD–a Turkish engineers association.  He also represents Turkey in EUROVENT–a European HVAC Manufacturers society.
